The second day of the EUdemos Summer School kicked off on September 4th, focusing on the history and functioning of the European Union. After a successful start, participants dived into key topics designed to deepen their understanding of the EU and their role as European citizens.
The morning opened with a compelling lecture by Prof. Cristian Rossi, Associate Professor of International Relations at the University of Cagliari. Prof. Rossi provided an in-depth look at the history of the European Union, outlining its evolution from a post-war economic project to a political entity. He emphasized the values of peace, cooperation, and solidarity that have shaped the EU’s mission since its inception.
Following this, Prof. Luis Rodrigo de Castro, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at Universidad CEU San Pablo, led a session on the functioning of EU institutions. His engaging and clear presentation explained the roles of the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the European Council, offering participants valuable insights into how decisions are made within the EU.
In the afternoon, the participants took a well-deserved break from academic discussions and headed to the stunning Porto Pino Beach, famous for its white sand dunes and crystal-clear waters. This relaxing interlude allowed students to unwind and bond in an informal setting, surrounded by Sardinia’s breathtaking natural beauty. It was the perfect way to recharge after an intense educational morning and foster connections between students from across Europe.
At the close of the day, Prof. Jerónimo Maillo, the EUdemos project coordinator, shared his satisfaction with the day’s success: “Today encapsulated the spirit of the Summer School. The morning was full of reflection and learning, thanks to the outstanding contributions from Professors Rossi and Rodrigo de Castro, while the afternoon at Porto Pino gave the students a chance to relax and connect in a different, more informal environment. This balance between formal education and leisure is key to the project’s success.”

The second day of the EUdemos Summer School ended on a high note, combining intellectual engagement with moments of social interaction, highlighting the importance of the intercultural and interactive learning approach central to the EUdemos initiative.
